Sports massage is not only something an athlete can experience. You do not have to be training for a marathon or pushing yourself in the gym. You may have overdone it in the garden at the weekend or in the park with the children.
In very general terms sports massage is a very deep form of massage. It involves some gentle warming massage techniques as you would experience in a therapeutic or beauty massage but dependant on the purpose of the massage it also works to release tension in deeper muscle through deeper stretching techniques. These have been known to be quite uncomfortable. The aims of a Sports Massage are to improve flexibility of muscles and joints, improve circulation and speed the healing of damaged tissue. It is also an amazing preventative tool against future injuries.
Initial Consultation
This session usually lasts an hour in which time a history will be taken, this enable me to determine my treatment approach. I can also advise on an exercise programme to follow as I have a background in Pilates and general fitness personal training. This could be an exercise programme to follow at home, or one for the gym.
My background
I have been practicing as a Sports Massage Therapist for 11 years. I have a Sports Therapy Clinic within a Health Club in Hampton. I studied initially with the Welsh Institute. I continued my study with the LSSM (London School of Sports Massage) and did a bridging exam. I was fortunate enough to study personally with Mel Cash for 4 months. I was also able to study personally with Mary Sanderson on the STR technique. I furthered my study with the Remedial course with the LSSM.
I am a member of the SMA (Sports Massage Association). They require 40 hours CPD (continual professional development|) for membership per year as a prerequisite which ensures that any therapist registerd with them is continually updating their knowledge.
I have worked in many situations from the London Marathon to the Indoor Rowing Championships. My clients include a World Championship level Dualthalete, International GB Cross Country Runner, Vet level Competative Cyclist and a Golf Professional.
